How Does Print on Demand Work? Everything You Need to Know
If you've ever bought something from WhatUWant2Buy — or if you're thinking about it — you may have wondered what "made to order" actually means. It's one of those phrases that gets used a lot, but the process behind it is genuinely interesting, and understanding it helps explain why our products look and feel different from what you'd find in a regular shop.
Here's a full breakdown of how print on demand works, why we use it, and what it means for you as a customer.
The print-on-demand process, step by step
A design is created
At WhatUWant2Buy, every design starts with AI. We use AI image generation tools to create unique artwork across dozens of styles — from abstract and anime to gothic, cyberpunk, Art Deco, and more. The result is a library of designs that don't exist anywhere else in the world.
You place your order
You browse the store, choose the design and product you want — say, a unisex hoodie in the cyberpunk style — and complete your purchase. At this point, nothing has been made yet. Your order triggers the production process.
The item is printed to order
Your order goes to the nearest fulfilment facility worldwide that can produce it. The design is printed directly onto the product using high-quality printing equipment — typically direct-to-garment (DTG) printing for clothing, or dye-sublimation for hard items like mugs and water bottles. This takes 2–3 days.
It's dispatched and tracked
Once your item is produced, it's packaged and sent directly to your address. You'll receive a tracking link via the SHOP app so you can follow it to your door. Delivery takes up to 5 working days from dispatch, though most orders arrive sooner.
You receive something genuinely unique
Because your item was made specifically for you, it's a one-of-a-kind product. The same design on a hoodie and a tote bag will look different because different printing methods and materials produce different results — and that variation is part of what makes print-on-demand special.
Print on demand vs buying from a regular shop
Most high street clothing and homeware goes through a very different process. Brands predict what will sell, manufacture thousands of units in advance, ship them to warehouses, distribute them to shops, and hope they sell before the season changes. Anything unsold gets discounted or, in many cases, destroyed.
Print on demand is the opposite of that model:
| Feature | High street / mass retail | Print on demand (WhatUWant2Buy) |
|---|---|---|
| When is it made? | Months before you buy it | Only when you order it |
| Design exclusivity | Thousands of identical copies | Unique designs, not sold elsewhere |
| Environmental impact | High — overproduction and waste | Low — nothing is made unless ordered |
| Delivery | Same day to a few days | 5–8 days total (2–3 to make + delivery) |
| Range of designs | Limited by what sells in volume | Unlimited — any design can be offered |
| Global availability | Often limited by region | Worldwide delivery from the nearest facility |
What types of products can be printed on demand?
Almost anything with a flat printable surface can be produced this way. At WhatUWant2Buy, we offer a wide range, including:
- Clothing — hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts, leggings, rash guards, zip hoodies, skirts, dresses and more, for kids, teens, men and women
- Bags — tote bags, backpacks, crossbody bags, drawstring bags
- Home décor — canvas prints, throw pillows, coasters, magnets
- Desk and stationery — notebooks, hardback journals, mouse pads, laptop sleeves
- Drinkware — white and black glossy mugs, stainless steel water bottles
Each product type uses slightly different printing technology to ensure the design looks its best on that particular material.
Why do we use AI to create the designs?
The print on demand model gives us the freedom to offer an almost unlimited range of designs — but creating thousands of original designs by hand would be impossible for a small team. AI image generation lets us explore styles and combinations that a single artist might never think of, and it means we can keep adding genuinely new designs to the store regularly.
Is print-on-demand good quality?
This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is: yes, when it's done properly. The quality of a print-on-demand item depends on three factors: the quality of the blank product, the resolution of the artwork, and the printing process.
We work with trusted fulfilment partners who use professional-grade equipment and high-quality blanks. Our designs are prepared at print-ready resolution, which means colours are vibrant and details are sharp. We're proud enough of the products to put our name on them — and with over 10,000 happy customers, we think that speaks for itself.
